Recently, a photo of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud’s license plate went viral and generated discussion on social media. The Mercedes is registered with the unusual number DL1 CJI 0001. Lloyd Mathias, an angel investor, initially posted the image on X.
“Saw Chief Justice of India, Dhananjay Chandrachud at a private function in Delhi yesterday. On my way out, I couldn’t help notice his car’s license plate number: DL1 CJI 0001. Very cool. Wonder if the Chief Election Commissioner’s car number plate is DL1 CEC 0001?” he wrote.
While some on social media were initially stunned by the unusual license plate, others eventually brought up the fact that DY Chandrachud, as Chief Justice of India, is entitled to drive the car as part of the benefits. Actually, the car is registered in the name of “Registrar Supreme Court of India”.
The Chief Justice of India gained attention recently when he suggested that isolated rural areas should receive university law education to ensure that students from tiny communities had equal access to becoming attorneys.
Speaking at the inauguration event of the Dr Rajendra Prasad National Law University here, Chandrachud said, “Technology has given us the ability to reach out to far-flung students. Despite developments in legal education, the contemporary legal education system favors only English-speaking urban children.”
He further added, “A survey conducted on diversity in five law universities shows that children from diverse backgrounds are unable to get admission in these universities due to not being able to speak English.”
He concluded his statement by saying that traditionally, programs like moot courts, internships, and contests were created for students coming from wealthy homes. But now universities and law schools should plan with children from a variety of backgrounds in mind as well.
