Darren Gough on Mohammed Shami
Team India began their Champions Trophy campaign with a victory over Bangladesh, followed by a win against Pakistan. With these victories, Rohit Sharma-led India has secured a spot in the semi-finals. However, before the knockouts, India will face New Zealand in their final league-stage match on March 2.

Ahead of this crucial encounter, former England fast bowler Darren Gough has shared his thoughts on India’s playing XI. Gough believes that Mohammed Shami should be rested for the match against New Zealand and suggested including a spinner in his place.

Darren Gough stated that India’s team management might consider resting Mohammed Shami against New Zealand to prevent any risk of injury. Notably, after the match against Pakistan, Shreyas Iyer commented on Shami’s fitness, confirming that the pacer is completely fit. However, Gough believes that India should opt for a spinner in the playing XI instead of Shami, as the pitch is expected to favor spin bowling.
“Lahore’s Pitch is Flat, but Dubai’s is Slow…”
Gough further explained that while the pitch in Lahore is flat, the conditions in Dubai are much slower. Therefore, adding an extra spinner could be a wise move. He also mentioned that Hardik Pandya has been bowling well but suggested that he should be rested for the New Zealand match.

“India is an extremely strong team, and I can say that with confidence. Recently, they whitewashed England in the ODI series and then defeated Bangladesh and Pakistan in the Champions Trophy. Now, the challenge ahead is New Zealand,” Gough added.
