Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin today (Wednesday) moved a resolution against the ‘one nation one election’ policy in the state assembly. ‘One Nation, One Election’ is a proposal of the Government of India which aims to conduct simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and all State Legislative Assemblies.
Stalin took the step as the high-level committee on ‘One Nation, One Election’ continued its talks with state election commissions and sought their views on holding simultaneous elections across the country on Monday.
Speaking in the House against ‘One Nation One Election’, Stalin said, “This House urges the Central Government not to implement the one nation one election policy because the principle of one nation one election is impractical, and is against the basis of democracy”.
Stalin further said, “In a large and diverse country like India, elections to local bodies, state assemblies and Parliament are held at different times on the basis of people-centric issues and this is against the idea of democratic decentralization. We cannot accept delimitation on the basis of census. States which are not interested in implementing population control policy will benefit more from delimitation based on census. We cannot accept this. We should oppose it”.
“There are 39 LS seats in Tamil Nadu, if delimitation is done, our number of LS seats will come down. Even with 39 MPs, our demands go unheard in the parliament; if it’s brought down, it may have a serious impact on our state,” Tamil Nadu CM, further added.
