Pawan Singh, a Bhojpuri singer-actor, announced on Wednesday that he will fight to fulfill the promise he made to the society, people, and his mother on the microblogging site X, following his decision a few days earlier to withdraw from the upcoming Lok Sabha elections on the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Asansol ticket.
“I will contest elections to fulfill the promise made to my society, people and mother. Your blessings and cooperation are expected. Jai Mata Di,” Pawan Singh wrote on X.
Bhojpuri star Pawan Singh to contest from Asansol on BJP ticket
On March 3, the singer-actor announced that he would not be able to participate in the general elections, citing personal concerns. He was the BJP’s nominee from the Asansol seat in West Bengal.
In an X post, Pawan Singh had written, “I express my heartfelt gratitude to the top leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party. The party trusted me and declared me as the candidate from Asansol, but due to some reason, I will not be able to contest the elections from Asansol.”
His choice to withdraw from the race was prompted by harsh criticism of his candidacy by political rivals of the saffron party, chiefly the ruling Trinamool Congress of Bengal, which claimed that his writings and music objectified women.
Amit Malviya, the chairman of the BJP’s IT cell, then sharply retaliated against the opposition, mentioning that TMC should stop disrespecting those who work for a living.
