Action Against Sheikh Hasina
Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, is facing fresh troubles as a court in Dhaka has ordered the seizure of her residence, ‘Sudhasadan,’ located in Dhanmondi, along with other properties belonging to her family. According to a report by Dhaka Tribune, an official stated that the court has also ordered the confiscation of 124 bank accounts linked to Hasina and her family.

The residence in question was registered under the name of Hasina’s late husband, nuclear scientist MA Wazed Miah, who was also known as Sudha Miah. The order for the seizure was issued on Tuesday by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib, following a petition from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Among the seized properties are assets belonging to Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, her daughter, Saima Wazed Putul, her sister, Sheikh Rehana, and Rehana’s children, Tulip Siddiq and Radwan Mujib Siddiq. The ACC, in its petition, claimed that the accused individuals were attempting to transfer or misuse their immovable properties, necessitating a seizure order until the investigation is completed.

Earlier, the court had imposed a travel ban on Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Rehana, and their children in connection with an investigation into alleged financial irregularities related to the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project. The ACC had raised concerns over the potential embezzlement of approximately 59,000 crore Bangladeshi Taka in the project and requested the travel ban. The order was issued when Sheikh Hasina was already in India following protests in Bangladesh last August.

Additionally, on February 6, the Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs formally lodged a strong protest with the Indian government over what it described as false and fabricated statements made by Sheikh Hasina. The ministry accused Hasina of using social media to incite instability. In a letter, the acting Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka was informed of Bangladesh’s deep concerns and disappointment, urging India to prevent Hasina from making any such statements while staying in the country.
