Calling unknown woman fair at night
Sending unsolicited compliments to an unknown woman late at night can land you in serious trouble. A Mumbai sessions court has upheld the conviction of a man for sending WhatsApp messages like “You are slim,” “You look very smart,” and “I like you” to a former corporator, ruling that such behavior amounts to obscenity and an insult to a woman’s modesty.

The case was heard by Additional Sessions Judge D G Dhoble, who emphasized that obscenity must be judged based on contemporary community standards. The complainant, a former corporator, received these messages between 11 PM and 12:30 AM, along with questions about her marital status and photos deemed inappropriate.

The court firmly stated that no respectable woman or her spouse would tolerate such unwanted advances, especially from a stranger. Furthermore, the accused failed to prove the existence of any prior relationship between them.
Originally convicted by a magistrate court in 2022 and sentenced to three months in jail, the man appealed the ruling, claiming he was falsely implicated due to political rivalry. However, the sessions court dismissed his argument, stating that no woman would stake her dignity by filing a false complaint without reason.

With the prosecution successfully proving that the accused sent obscene messages and images, the court upheld the guilty verdict and sentence, reinforcing that harassment via digital platforms carries real-world consequences.
