For reportedly smuggling drugs worth over Rs. 2,000 crores out of the nation, a film producer has been arrested. The Narcotics Control Bureau stated on Saturday that Jaffer Sadiq, a former DMK official who worked in the South Indian film industry, was taken into custody after a four-month manhunt.
Sadiq has been dubbed the ‘kingpin’ of the drug trafficking network involving Australia, New Zealand, and India by the NCB. Officials claimed that he had transported drugs worth Rs. 2,000 crores in Australia and New Zealand. With his most recent movie set for release this month, Sadiq has so far made four films.
One week prior to his arrest, authorities had apprehended two rail passengers in Madurai and a Chennai dump yard in possession of methamphetamine valued at Rs. 180 crores. The intention was to smuggle the drugs to Sri Lanka.
On February 29, authorities in Chennai announced that they had recovered 36 kg drug from the passenger couple and an additional 6 kg from the Kodungaiyur trash yard. The seizure was followed by the couple’s arrest.
‘Ice’ or ‘crystal meth’ is another name for methamphetamine, a highly addictive psychostimulant drug that has life-threatening implications and strong euphoric effects akin to cocaine, according to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence.
