A worrying string of student suicides in Kota has again continued, and this morning an IIT aspirant was discovered dead in his hostel room. Despite strong efforts to stop similar tragedies in the education hub, where students from all over the country converge to prepare for competitive exams, this is the fourth such case this year. This happened just a day after JEE Mains result announcement.
Jharkhand native Shubh Choudhary had been preparing for the JEE-Mains exam, which is necessary to gain admission to the nation’s best engineering colleges, including the prestigious IITs.
He had spent the previous two years in Kota. Shubh was surprised to see that his score was lower than he had anticipated when the JEE Mains results were announced yesterday. Unfortunately, he took the fatal step and his body was discovered dangling from the ceiling, this morning.
His room is being searched by police for more information or a suicide note. The child’s family has been notified, and when they arrive in Kota, an autopsy will be performed.
Meanwhile, in a different incident, a student has vanished from the area around Kota since Sunday. In addition to the state emergency response force being called into action, police have begun a search. The Chambal River is being searched using motorboats. The stress of acing IIT-JEE and other competitive exams is the main reason why the Kota administration finds it difficult to prevent student suicides in the education hub. Although coaching institutes have guidelines to assist kids manage stress better, suicides still occur. Up to 26 student suicides were recorded by the education hub last year.
