A Noida-based BPO employee, identified as Jay Krishna Kumar Mehta from Supaul in Bihar, was apprehended for allegedly making a false bomb threat in an attempt to delay his flight from Darbhanga in Bihar to Delhi due to running late, as per police reports on Saturday. The SpiceJet flight in question had already taken off by the time Mehta made the call.
Upon landing at the IGI airport in Delhi, the passengers were evacuated, and the aircraft was subjected to a thorough search in an isolated bay. No evidence of a bomb was found, leading to the dismissal of the threat as a hoax.
The case was registered against Mehta at Gurugram’s Udyog Vihar police station since he had made the call to the airline’s call center there. Additionally, the Delhi Police registered a separate case as the IGI airport falls under its jurisdiction.
Following his arrest, Mehta was handed over to Gurugram Police and charged under sections 506 (criminal intimidation) and 507 (criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication) of the Indian Penal Code. The call was made to SpiceJet’s Gurugram-based call center, with Mehta identifying himself as Kishore.
During the call, he claimed to have overheard two men discussing a bomb threat on SpiceJet flight SG-8496 from Darbhanga to Delhi on January 24, prompting the airport to be put on high alert even though the flight had already departed.
After a meticulous search, the bomb threat was confirmed to be unfounded, leading to Mehta’s arrest with the assistance of technical surveillance in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. In subsequent interrogations, Mehta, a graduate from Magadh University in Bihar, admitted to making the call to intentionally delay the flight due to his tardiness at the Darbhanga airport departure counter.
